"Rivers"
By: Mike Tomaro
Instrumentation: Big Band
Publisher: KJOS Neil A. Kjos Music Company
Grade 3 1/2 Swing Tempo = 200 $60.00

As you approach “Rivers”for the first time try rehearsing this chart at a slower tempo. This will allow the players of various melodic lines the chance to understand how their parts fit tighter. Do not allow the band to get too heavy or loud; lighter in this case is better. Carefully observe all articulation markings, as they are an essential element of the correct interpretation of the piece.

Letter E may be opened up for brass solos as desired. The solo section continues into letter F as the backgrounds are brought in. The drums trade phrases with the ensemble beginning at letter I. Throughout this section the drummer should be aware of setting up the next ensemble phrase.

An open saxophone solo section follows, with backgrounds available to cue at letter K.

The band then begins a gradual build through several key changes. The peak should be reached at letter O. Take care to avoid over-blowing in this section.

At letter P the chart returns to the opening idea and winds down to a quite ending. “Rivers”is a fine chart and will be an excellent addition to your big band book.
