"Kristi's Waltz"
Composed and Arranged By: Dean Sorenson
Instrumentation: Big Band
Publisher: KJOS Neil A. Kjos Music Company
Grade 4 Jazz Waltz Tempo = 144 $40.00

" Kristi's Waltz" is an original composition in a medium waltz fell that features trombone. There are not enough pieces out there in this important jazz style and this one features an instrument, trombone, that has not been offered this privilege very often.

The opening bass part should be soft and somewhat understated; reminiscent of what might be heard on the recording of “Someday My Prince Will Come.” Be sure that the cluster chords entering just before the melody are well-balanced and in tune. The chart should be played with a light, bouncy feeling, with special attention given to staying on top of the beat especially during the ensemble unison after the trombone solo.

This piece is a trombone feature with some excellent ensemble writing. Careful attention to intonation, dynamics and articulations is essential for a good performance of this piece. There are just not many charts out there in this time feel featuring the trombone. Perhaps it’s time for you to get this chart and inspire your trombone section to audition for the privilege of being featured at your next jazz concert on “Kristi's Waltz.”

Top note for trumpet B above the staff
