"Every Time It Happens"
Composed and Arranged By: Dave Eshelman
Instrumentation: Big Band
Publisher: KJOS Neil A. Kjos Music Company
Grade 3 Bossa Nova Tempo = 120 $35.00

The Bossa Nova “Every Time It Happens” by Dave Eshelman salutes the music of Thad Jones. Thad Jones came to the forefront as one of America’s finest big band writers in the mid-sixties as a co-leader of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Jones’ music was strongly rooted in the traditions of jazz, blues, gospel, spirituals and field hollers. He also incorporated an eclectic collection of symphonic, rock and Latin influences. Thad Jones composition “It Only Happens Every Time” is a beautiful Bossa Nova that has over the years become a classic. Here in lies the inspiration for Dave Eshelman’s composition “Every Times It Happens.”
A listening to Thad Jones composition is highly recommended before the band attempts Dave’s chart for reference to where his chart has evolved from. This arrangement is written for a younger band featuring a solo trombone. Most of this arrangement is written primarily in the staff accommodating the younger musician. Consequently, a sound system for projection is recommended so that the soloist’s part will be dominant. If you have a more advanced soloist it is appropriate for sections of this part to be taken up the octave. These areas are measures 76-80 and 91-102.
“Every Time It Happens” is a well written Bossa Nova” that fits many younger bands and will have a very positive effect on those students for learning and playing the beautiful style and texture of the Latin Bossa Nova.

Top note for trumpet F# in the staff (top line)
