Reviews "Catch Me Up" Composed and Arranged By: Dave Eshelman Instrumentation: Big Band Publisher: KJOS Neil A. Kjos Music Company Grade 5 Medium Swing Tempo = 108 $50.00 " Catch Me Up" is an original piece dedicated to the great Chick Corea. A remarkable composer and keyboardist, Corea is one of the most skillful and creative musicians of our time. Dave Eshelman states in the front of this arrangement, “ I had a chance to speak with him somewhat regularly for many years and learn a bit about him and his music in our conversations. I saw him recently after not talking to him for quite a while and he said to me, “What have you been doing? Catch me up.” From this exchange comes the title for this Eshelman original. The piece itself utilizes several compositional techniques Corea tends to favor, contrasting sections with alternating (slower and faster) harmonic rhythm, rising melodic sequences, unusual phrase lengths, sweeping cyclic melodic lines and progressions combining diminished chords with chromatic bass lines. Dave states that “ As always however, the most important element is the feeling of the music; the work is inspired by the excitement, vision and intrigue that is so much of Chick’s music. I agree with Dave on the above, but to accomplish this task you will need some very seasoned musicians who are familiar with this statement and more. “ Catch Me Up’ is a very well written original composition/arrangement, but make sure you have the musicians who are willing to put in the time to make this chart happen.
