Reviews "That’s Not My Dog" Written and Arranged By: Doug Beach and George Shutack Instrumentation: Big Band Publisher: Kendor Music, Inc. Grade 2 1/2 Swing (Quarter Note) q = 116 $42.00 This original chart comes to us from Kendor is part of the “Jazz Foundation Series” giving very young musicians a chance to discover the basics of jazz music performed in a swing style. The arrangement should be played with a relaxed, swing groove throughout. If all of the players are focused on a good sense of time, the music will come together quickly. All articulation and dynamic markings should be closely observed throughout the piece. The solo section at measure 37 may be opened up as desired by the conductor. Be sure to cue the backgrounds as needed, and use the 2nd ending after the final soloist. There are two sample solos provided in the packet with this chart that give each of your musicians solid ground to start from. These are written out solos, but if the students want to grow as improvisers they will need to be encouraged to invent on their own. For the advanced beginning student or for just someone who is adventurous chord changes are written. Listening sessions before, during and after class will help lock in the swing concept for these young artists. “That’s Not My Dog" is a very good learning tool that will start your young students mastering jazz music early. Kendor is providing a great tool that supplies a foundation for the future of these students who want to advance in jazz. Top note for trumpet is written F# in the staff Bart Marantz |
