Reviews "Baggy Pants Blues" Written and Arranged By: Ethan Freier Instrumentation: Big Band Publisher: KJOS Grade 3 Bright Swing (Quarter Note) q = 152 $48.00 “Baggy Pants Blues” is a grade 1 blues swing chart written specifically with the young middle school student in mind. Inspiration for the title comes from the fashionable baggy pants of some middle school boys being warn at the present time. In the words of the composer, “These poor kids can’t even run without holding their pants up with one hand! That would give me the blues!” As with all “Standard of Excellence Jazz In Concert” selections, “Baggy Pants Blues” is designed to be played by the entire jazz ensemble. The chart will, however, sound full and complete when performed by as few as nine players: 1st and 2nd alto saxophones, 1st tenor saxophone, 1st and 2nd trumpets, 1st trombone piano, bass and drums. The solo section of “Baggy Pants Blues” measures 19-20 and 33-44, is equally as flexible and can be repeated as necessary to accommodate multiple soloists. A CD containing a demonstration of the chart is included and attached to the jacket of this chart. “Baggy Pants Blues” includes swing playing guidelines, improvisation scales and suggested solos for soloists on the back side of each instrumental part. This is a great tool for the beginning jazz ensemble and offers very good written music that your young ensemble will enjoy performing. “Baggy Pants Blues” is part of the “Standard of Excellence Jazz In Concert” selections written as an educational tool for directors around the country. If you’re looking to start a new ensemble or just want to reinforce the basics to your middle school group this one is for you. Top note for trumpet is written D in the staff Bart Marantz |
