"The Agin Cajun"
Written and Arranged By: Frank Mantooth
Instrumentation: Combo / Small Group
Publisher: Kendor Music, Inc.
Grade: 5 Samba Tempo = 104 $18.00

" The Agin Cajun" is a Samba that will challenge your combo right out of the box, but because of the fine writing of Frank Mantooth the final result should be outstanding. This chart is scored for trumpet, tenor sax, trombone, Piano, guitar, bass and drums. The rhythm section can go with just piano or guitar, but, because this is a samba, it is srecommended to use both. This will require great concentration on the part of your pianist and guitarists as the chart moves at a fast pace and theyshould be careful not to step on each other while compimg.

The solos are open and are set up with some very challenging chord changes that are a challenge to say the least. The tempo is demanding itself, but almost all of the chord changes are altered, allowing for wonderful substitutions and lots of colors if the students you have can meet the order at hand.

There is no background written for the solos and this tends to make the improvisation section a little less interesting. An advanced group can pen their own and have them write a slightly different one for each new soloist.

The ending is a fade out on a chord with the bass taking us out on a familiar samba lick. “The “Agin Cajun" is a good chart for your small group, but is geared toward the advanced high school ensemble or solid university combo. With a very challenging tempo and chord changes that will take some time to master it is recommended that this chart be attempted by only the serious at heart.

Top note for trumpet is written Ab above the staff.
