Reviews "Tewmprana Es La Noche" Composed/Arranged By: Carmine Pastore Instrumentation: Big Band Publisher: Warner Bros. Publications Grade: 4 Latin Samba = 100 $40.00 “Tewmprana Es La Noche" is one of those charts that just cooks from the first note. The entire ensemble is playing from the start, and the arranger has employed many good arranging techniques for this size ensemble. The melody is taken to a small group setting at measure number 11 which adds a combo sound with big band accompaniment to an already exciting beginning. The instrumentation for this effect is alto sax, tenor sax, and trumpet, giving an almost be bop small group instrumentation and sound to a samba big band chart! This concept is very pleasing, not only to the band playing the arrangement, but will give the audience listening to the performance of “Tewmprana Es La Noche" something to take home with them. This is one of those melodies that just stays with you. Trombones take over at number 43 on a very nice bridge composed by Carmine Pastore. A 16 -measure interlude comes into play to introduce an alto solo with written background punches from the trumpets and bones. The shout course at number 109 involves the entire ensemble and is very well written giving authentic Latin Samba lines for the entire big band to play. This shout course takes the ensemble to a final and very effective hard/accented quarter note ending . “Tewmprana Es La Noche" is a nice original composition arranged for big band that will work well in most any good high school or college program. It will also be a crowd pleaser and when placed at the end of your jazz concert will have the audience asking for more. Top note for trumpet is written Bb above the staff. Bart Marantz |
